I am thinking that would be very difficult with this show where there is so much interweaving of the dialogue into the songs. Look at the opening number where Ralphie starts singing right after Broderick says "And time was running out". Listen to the safety vamp under the dialogue. Is Broderick counting how many vamps there are so he knows exactly when to say his line to time it for Ralphie to start singing? Mom's "Why aren't your boots on?" has to come right before Ralphie starts down the stairs to sing his next verse. It isn't just everything stops while a character sings a song. A character sings a song, then there is dialogue, then the character sings more and then more dialogue. That happens a lot in this show which is why I think they would need live musicians.
