I just saw the movie today. I think some of the blame for the music is in presentation. There are some really strong melodies to my ears, but they are orchestrated to sound like the same song over and over. And, I suspect there is some autotune in use that makes some of the voices bland and further damages the songs.
Condon's "Beauty and the Beast" was one of the worst things I've seen. It wasn't that it was awful; it's just how bad it was compared to the original movie. But what do I know? The movie raked it in.
I enjoyed "The Greatest Showman." Yes, the critics are all right, but it's still a pretty entertaining spectacle with great choreography.
