“They don’t need any more money.”
Really? In a for-profit business, who makes this determination? If Dunkin Donuts jacks up its java price or Macy’s wants more dough for Polo or a new BMW is two grand more, who decides it’s too much? Leads the consumer boycott? This concept of commercial theatre as exempt from profit calculation is fantasy. When “Hamilton” ceases to be in demand, it will be discounted to accommodate new ticket buying trends. Just like “Chorus Line” and “Phantom,” both once just as hot. This idea that the flavor of the year or decade owes its audience anything other than a great performance at prices it is willing to pay is contrary to capitalism. And “Hamilton” offers free matinee seats to city teens and has a lottery. They kbow how to make money and to introduce art to those who don’t have access. Bravo. |
