yes, to an extent, but Broadway (as opposed to the theatre in general) is a luxury, even at $100. And if the Met is not drawing audiences, I don't think that is solely a function of price. Just as with Broadway shows, you can price dynamically and discount, and to paraphrase someone smarter than any of us, you can't pay people enough to get them to go see a show they don't want to see. Ask the papering services about the paper they have left to burn at 8PM every night of the week. Seeing a show for $80 may seem like a bargain, but that too is a luxury for most folks. And remember you are focusing on tickets for the holidays to the top show in the world.
As to MBG's point, again, to an extent, but it is also true that the market was led to this point by scalpers. I don't think it would be there on its own. (But I can't prove it.) |
