WATCH ON THE RHINE at Berkley Rep

I'm in the Bay Area for the holidays and caught this terrific show here, a transfer from The Guthrie. I have always admired the Bette Davis/Paul Lukas film version and was curious to see the original Hellman play. Nazi sympathizers in Washington D.C....you know, a period piece. It's being given a gorgeous looking traditional staging with an excellent cast headed by Elijah Alexander, Sarah Agnew, Jonathan Walker and Caitlin O'Connell. Part thriller, part political wake-up call, part family drama and part love story, it is a very satisfying evening in the theater, gripping, unsettling, and deeply moving. I'd be surprised is somebody doesn't produce the play in New York in the next season or two. In the meantime it's playing in Berkley through mid-January.
