| -42ND STREET: A big, glitzy, glamorous West End revival starring a fantastic Sheena Easton. A reminder of why we love musicals about show biz! -ANGELS IN AMERICA: An epic, expertly-acted London revival from the National headed to NY this spring. Andrew Garfield excels. -INDECENT: A tragic celebration of love, Judaism and the importance of uncensored art is my favorite play of 2017. It was a beautiful production presented by a wonderful ensemble. -IF I FORGET: Writer Steven Levenson weaves an all too common story of grown children confronting their widowed father, storied past, chaotic present and the future with humor and heart. -JESUS HOPPED THE A TRAIN: Perfect timing for a revival about our troubled prison system, specifically Riker’s, and the power of religion and redemption. -ONCE ON THIS ISLAND: Director Michael Arden has conceptualized a joyous, exuberant production elevating the material with heart and relevance. Bravo to the extraordinary cast especially Hailey Kilgore in a star-making performance as Ti Moune. -Girls of a Certain Age - OUR LADIES OF PERPETUAL SUCCOUR & THE WOLVES: Two groups of girls navigate their teen years in a Scottish Catholic School choir and a high school soccer team in middle America. As different these great plays are, they are really very similar. And both excellent. -PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS: Even more powerful the second time, Denise Gough captures a young woman in the throes of addiction and path to recovery with vigor and rage, supported by a tremendous ensemble in a tight, affecting production. -SOJOURNERS & HER PORTMANTEAU: This emotional look at the Nigerian-American experience over two evenings left me wanting to know much more about this family and their struggles and successes as human beings. It also hurt me as I thought of all the dreamers… -Small Scale Sondheim - PACIFIC OVERTURES, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE and SWEENEY TODD: Three intimate revivals from the Sondheim cannon proved again that art isn’t easy, but in the right hands on and offstage, his work shines. It certainly did here. -TORCH SONG: Humor and heart and Ruehl and Urie! |
