It does not need a "larger-than-life-size" star in the role.

I'm not saying that it doesn't need someone big to make the show run, but the role itself is well-crafted and has been played successfully by all manner of actresses (and actors).

I have only seen Midler and the show was more event than traditional musical comedy performance. Midler's success as Dolly was kind of a self-fulfilling prophesy. For years people said she'd be ideal and when she makes her first entrance she is unabashedly connecting with her fans the way she would in a concert , basically saying "Look guys! I'm actually here! And I'm seventy-f***ing- one years old!" and they slavishly respond in kind and everybody has an amazing time.

But by all accounts Murphy is turning in a more nuanced and cohesive performance that plays with the other actors more than with the audience. I expect Peters will do the same. And it will be interesting to see if there's a sufficient audience for that. What's there is very strong: a superb supporting cast, terrific design, smart and crisp direction.

I'd love to see Latifah in the role, but I really don't think the show itself needs that kind of personality to make it work. It's been working for more than 75 years with an astonishing array of people performing it. It's not THE BOY FROM OZ.
