Ideally, Dolly should be played by a clown. Someone who has that special relationship to the audience that jumps out of the play’s naturalistic circumstances. Peters has that capacity. So does Chenoweth (though she’s terribly elfin for it). Whoopi? Rosie O’Donnell?
Audra can do anything, but I don’t think of her as that kind of performer. |
