The score to Barnum doesn't sound like generic pop songs from the early 2000s, but it doesn't sound particularly like the 19th century either (though, yes, it does sound a bit more "traditional Broadway", rather than Pasek and Paul's more contemporary sound). "Barnum" has its own problems as a show (which is why there hasn't been a professional revival since the 1980s), in particular that Charity Barnum's entire character seems to exist to prevent production numbers happening, making it very difficult to sympathise when she dies in act two.
