And did it prepare you for his astonishing tour de force in Luca Guadagnino's new movie, ''Call Me by Your Name''? Sorry I missed it. Ben Brantley called Chamalet ''gifted'' in his N.Y. Times review, but Shanley, who wrote and directed it, got more mixed reviews for his semi-autobiographical portrait of a conflicted young student at Catholic prep school. ... When Chamalet picked up his prize for best Breakthrough Performance (for ''Call Me'') at the Gotham Awards, he listed artists who inspired him to pursue acting, and the first person he mentioned was Shanley.

If you haven't seen ''Call Me,'' it's incredibly beautiful and sensual romance between Elio (played by Chalamet) and Oliver (played by the amazing Armie Hammer). Exquisitely adapted by James Ivory from Andre Aciman's coming-of-age novel, it's about first love, the magic of summer, the beauty of Italy and so much more. (Michael Stuhlbarg, who plays Elio's father, also has a memorable monologue about life and love in it.)

This Oscar-buzzed movie has rightly put Chalamet on the map, and he deserves every compliment and award coming his way. When Chalamet was a recent guest on Ellen DeGeneres' TV show, she gushed that ''Call Me'' ''might be my favorite movie of the year.'' Ellen also pointed out twice that Chalamet is straight in real life: ''You're heterosexual ... and knowing that you're young and straight and you did this, made me love you even more.'' I realize that Ellen was complimenting Chalamet's performance and commitment, but I wonder if that plays into the trope that it's still considered so much more ''brave'' for straight actors to play gay. Would an openly gay actor have gotten the same acclaim, or would some folks assume it's less of a challenge for a gay actor to play gay? Any actor, straight or LGBT, who played Elio so sublimely, deserves the same amount of love and praise.

By the way, Chalamet charmingly describes himself as a ''theater kid'' from LaGuardia High. Can't wait to see him return to the stage.

And I can't wait to see his co-star, Hammer, make his Broadway debut in Young Jean Lee's ''Straight White Men'' next summer.
