I agree with everything in your post, particularly about the line of questioning from DeGeneres. How ironic in the season when "Boys..." is returning to NYC with a cast that won't be queried thus.
But Stuhlbarg, having quite a (another) year, is sublime in a basically one scene role. He appears throughout of course, but the movie's deepest emotions bubble up in his big scene, which no matter what critics try to do to spoil, cannot be spoiled. Stuhlbarg daringly refuses to play the scene as the third act "moment" that it is. He just makes it achingly real. Watched the final 20 minutes again yesterday, and it's impossible to imagine the film's impact without that 4 minute scene.
