| Well-said, Den. I didn't find anything ''problematic'' or tawdry or predatory about the beautiful and delicately delineated romance between Elio and Oliver. It also helps that Elio, intellectually, is so wise and mature beyond his years, and that the age of consent in Italy is 14. As for Elio's wise and well-spoken dad, he movingly addresses his son about unconditional love and why it's important to embrace both its joys and its sorrows. And he knows he's not giving traditional fatherly advice to his son: ''In my place, most parents would hope the whole thing goes away, or pray that their sons land on their feet soon enough. But I am not such a parent. In your place, if there is pain, nurse it, and if there is a flame, don’t snuff it out, don’t be brutal with it. ... We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of 30 and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to feel nothing so as not to feel anything—what a waste! ...” Luca Guadagnino, the film's director, says of that speech: ''The dialogue comes from the book, from André Aciman's wisdom. ... I think this is a movie for families, and it's a family film. It's about the invisible bonds that create the people we are and how the transmission of emotions and knowledge and the capacity of compassion between generations and people transform people for the best. It's utopic, maybe, but why not?" By the way, as soon as ''Prodigal Son'' closed last year, Chalamet flew to Italy to begin working on ''Call Me by Your Name.'' |
