| Don't sigh too deeply too soon, NewtonUK. What's "basically dead" on Broadway is not "the play," but the long-running hit play. Apart from Off-Broadway transfers like last year's SWEAT, INDECENT, and OSLO, Broadway has in recent years been the place where New York first saw A DOLL'S HOUSE PART 2, THE MOTHER-F***ER WITH THE HAT, and the current tenants of the Beaumont and the Friedman, JUNK and THE CHILDREN. i realize that none of these is a cash cow like LIFE WITH FATHER or TOBACCO ROAD, but I think they have the edge on those works in the dramatic quality department. Please remember also that we now have four nonprofit theatres producing regularly on Broadway - LCT, MTC, Roundabout and 2nd Stage - whose missions involve producing seasons of valuable plays, including new works, and who don't particularly aim for long runs. So, although the principal sources of exciting new plays lie elsewhere - Off-Broadway, resident theatres elsewhere, London - reports of the Broadway play's death are a little bit exaggerated. In this particular realm, money isn't everything. |
