It is most decidedly not news. (But it is not "fake news" either.) And, poor Peter Marks timing is off. According to broadwayjournal.com, foreign ticket buyers declined a bit this year, perhaps due to Trump's rhetoric. http://broadwayjournal.com/broadway-has-record-2017-wicked-sales-defy-gravity/
What Broadway has done very well is beat the scalpers at their own game. When the precursor of the Broadway League was founded in 1932, its purpose was to “protect the general public patrons of the theater, owners of theatrical entertainments, operators of theaters and reputable theater ticket brokers against the evils of speculation of theater tickets.” Eighty-five years later the League has found out how to beat the scalpers: become them. |
