"Elephant Man" and "Crucifer of Blood" originated in London, btw. Neither was strictly speaking an American play. "Elephant Man" won all the best play awards given that year except for the Pulitzer--which could only go to American plays--and was given to "Buried Child." (My book about drama and musical awards should be published in January.) "Buried Child" didn't play Broadway that year altho it was revived on Broadway, briefly, in the 1990s.
