| Did you read my post? Oliver's age is unspecified in the film and the actor portraying him is 31 years old and looks and acts that age in the mpvie -- he's an adult and Elio is still an underaged boy. A 30-year professor's assistant is essentially a teacher in the eyes of a 17-year old boy -- they are not equals or school chums. Is geography an excuse for an improper sexual relationship? You are making the same argument that several men in this country have recently made regarding their relationships with underaged young girls and/or boys. Of course, couplings like this happen all the time and there is nothing wrong with filmmakers depicting it. I liked the film -- it's beautifully done. I'm just questioning its morally ambiguous viewpoint. BTW in the 1970's I was a high school teacher and baseball coach in the Chicago suburbs. During that time I was sexually propositioned by a few male students and received love letters from a couple of female students. I gently and discreetly declined all their overtures (although I still have the letters). |
