Interesting but you can't seriously suggest we lack "important plays" today.

Theatre (and all performing arts) have always had multiple audiences, including those seeking food for thought, and those seeking entertainment. I don't think that has changed.

What has changed is the availability of alternate media that you reference, and also the dramatic expansion of the classes that can appreciate more than mere entertainment. (In spite of what may make it seem otherwise.)

I agree that there is a shockingly small percentage of enduring theatre. I've always bristled at the premature invocation of the word "classic." Lots of thoughtful plays are and have always been written to resonate in the present only. And it is unreasonable to think that much of what some of us view as important today will be viewed as such after we are all gone.
