| I never read the book and neither did others who have contributed to this thread. In the film Elio is definitely 17 and is obviously a sexually inexperienced boy -- Oliver's age is unspecified but he's clearly an adult and sexually experienced -- he is not a boy. Another poster said he was 30, which seemed plausible to me since that was Hammer's actual age when the film was shot. I think the film is outstanding -- one of the best that I've seen this year. I think the sexual and romantic chemistry between Chamalet and Hammer is very convincing. I just think it's morally questionable. Elio and Oliver are not school chums who are experimenting sexually -- Elio is a boy and Oliver is a man. Just because they happen to be in Italy is not an excuse for an inappropriate sexual relationship that would be condemned in the United States. I'm troubled by the fact that many here are making the same argument that various actors, politicians, and other celebrities having been making in recent months about their romantic activities with underaged girls and/or boys. |
