I don't take that to be his point though perhaps he would agree with you. I don't, and I don't find your cherry-picking (at either end) to be persuasive. P.S. There were no new "popular" Miller or Williams plays in the period Newton dropped his apple in.
There was never a "mass" audience for theatre, but the sort of broader theatre-going you are being nostalgic about pretty much went away with the advent of TV, not in the 21st C.
And many of the current "dead" plays have quite a bit of currency in terms of productions at every level around the country and, recently, on television as well.
I find lots to get excited about among the new plays we are seeing. I'm sorry if you don't. |
