| Given that LIFE WITH FATHER is the record holder among plays, I'm surprised that it has never been revived on Broadway and, as far as I know, is rarely if ever done elsewhere. One might have thought the Roundabout would have gotten around to it by now. But I think there are probably several reasons for this. The humor of the play is very gentle, some might say quaint and outdated. The cast is fairly large and includes three underage children, with all the production issues that entails. Also, for complicated reasons, the movie version has become a very obscure item, so I guess the title is no longer viewed as marketable. Still, ironic that a play once SO popular has had no afterlife to speak of. |
