I think because Chalamet looks so young in the movie has made the relationship in the film look tawdry in some viewers' eyes. Oliver is supposed to be in his mid 20s in the movie, not 30. I did not see the parents as pushing their son into the relationship. (A friend of mine hates the movie because that's how she interprets the film.) Elio clearly was an agent in this relationship, not a victim. It saddens me that this acclaimed film will now be reduced by some as a film about parents who pushed their son into an inappropriate relationship or a film about an older man preying on a young boy.
By the way, I saw the film at a packed screening full of young women and men -- Chalamet was doing a Q&A -- and they loved the film.
I saw Chalamet in Prodigal Son and he was excellent. I hope he returns to the stage. |
