| Bernadette Peters is a fine actress and has had a long, enviable career on stage, TV, films, and concerts. Nevertheless, she has never been able to sell tickets on Broadway like a Hugh Jackman or Nathan Lane. She has played leads in a surprising number of commercially unsuccessful shows like La Strada, On the Town '71 revival, Mack & Mabel, Song and Dance, The Goodbye Girl, Gypsy '03 revival, and Follies '11 revival. However, to be fair she has also had her share of commercial successes like Dames at Sea, Sunday in the Park with George (most authorities I have consulted cite anecdotal evidence that it eventually recouped), Into the Woods (recouped on the road, declared a hit by Variety), Annie Get Your Gun '99 revival (a substantial hit which recouped during Peters' run), and A Little Night Music '09 revival (recouped during Peters' run). |
