| I was raised (well, not raised, but you get the idea) by Jesuits, and at the core there is a notion that one cannot have faith without having it challenged. Whether one ends (ended) up believing or not, plays (as well, obviously, as every other form of engagement) that challenge (and that includes denigrate, mock and ridicule) are the only path to intellectually honest beliefs. Summertheater is entitled to his/her beliefs and even offense, but that does not undercut the value of the play (which, for the record, I did not think was a particularly strong challenge in any way). |
