| Well, summertheater was upset about the play's alleged representation of Jesus, the founder of all Christianity. Jesus was never accused of seducing young boys or girls nor of any mistreatment of them. I too am horrified of the actions of some Catholic priests in their sexual abuses as well as the actions of many Catholics in their attitudes toward homosexuals and their treatment of them (as well as those of many fundamentalist religions. I do not confuse those actions with a "form" of Catholicism. I have seen nothing in the discussion of the play, Mankind which seems to deal with that. I do acknowledge the playwright does say there is no place in religion for him because of his sexuality. His play however from what I can gather attacks the foundation of religion itself alleging that religion and some people have indicated it is broad enough to include all religions is created by man to serve man's own ends. I respect the playwright's right to express his opinion. As Ryhog has so wisely pointed out, these allegations are the necessary purpose of art and serve whatever beliefs we draw from them. Summertheater has rejected the playwrights thesis as is the right and perhaps the duty of an observer (depending upon one's beliefs and reaction to the challenge) I respect Summertheater's opinion but do not respect the call for defunding the artists nor censorship of the message. As I pointed out elsewhere, playwright O'Hara has stated that satire has not succeeded unless someone is ready to ride you out of town on a rail. Summertheater has ironically handed O'Hara quite a victory. It will be interesting to see if critics and future audiences agree that Mankind is as monumental an achievement in satire as Summertheater does. | |
