| TheatreMania once did a tandem interview with Laura and Zachary in her dressing room at ''She Loves Me,'' and he talked about his Broadway debut in ''First Date,'' so it might've just slipped her mind. She might've missed seeing ''First Date,'' too. Even though it ran for about 200 performances, not everyone caught it. I loved it and saw it multiple times for Zach's comic tour de force. Zach earned a Theatre World Award for his Broadway debut. As anyone as who has gone to the Theatre World Awards, the highlights often include the presentations of the award; more often than not, they try to find a co-star or colleague to present the prize who usually regales the audience with funny or fascinating anecdotes about the recipient. And it should be mentioned that the presenter is a former Theatre World winner, too, so it's kind of a passing of the torch. It's usually the first award for most Broadway newbies, so it's a magical moment. Not so for Zachary Levi. Len Cariou presented the Theatre World Award to him, and was totally clueless about Zachary. Hadn't seen ''First Date.'' Didn't know him. Why didn't Len look up a YouTube snippet of Zach's performance or Google one of his rave reviews? I always hate it when a presenter says: ''I don't know this person'' or ''I haven't seen his work.'' So prepare and act as if you did. Speaking of ''First Date,'' I gotta mention this hilarious clip of Zachary and Celia Keenan-Bolger from ''Don't Quit Your Night Job,'' a comedy revue at 54 Below that season. Zach and Celia did a ''Broadway Smash Up'' in which they reprised their respective characters - Aaron from ''First Date'' and Laura from ''The Glass Menagerie'' - going out on a first date. A riot! |
