| Growing up in a small, Southern city, I lived for the bus-and-truck tours that came to town a few times each year. No doubt that those were Equity tours, which certainly this one is not. How else could I have seen Pia Zadora sing the title song in "Applause," or Dede Conn in "Godspell," or Sheila Smith as "Mame"? Or Carol Channing, in "Hello, Dolly," in '66-'67, somehow hitting our town that (relatively) early in the life of that show? In the casting announcement for this tour, posted last May in Backstage, we see the compensation package offered: "Pay $550 week for all principal roles, $350/week for all ensemble/understudy. Higher salary for the roles of Zach and Cassie based on experience level. Per diem, housing and travel also covered for all roles." Now living in NYC for many years, these (still bus-and-truck?) tours still fascinate me, hitting cities and towns that don't get too much. I'll admit I'd never even heard of Elmira, NY, and wonder how they'll pull together audiences for at least two performances. I'd love to see a documentary TV series or film made about this whole tour. Are the cast members experiencing a big break in getting cast in this? What is it like to work a tour like this? |
