I'm hesitant to place all the blame for that production on Eustis, because there were some elements and performances that really worked. To be honest, with some rare exceptions, I've found most Shakespeare in the Park productions I've seen to be real grab bags regardless of who is at the helm. To me, Stuhlbarg was one of the weaker elements of that HAMLET.
Stuhlbarg was announced for a return to the stage at Williamstown Theatre Festival two summers ago, in a play called THE CHINESE ROOM. He dropped out due to a film commitment and was replaced by Brian O'Byrne. It was just as well -- I saw the play, and it wasn't very good -- but I do want Stuhlbarg back on stage in something. I think he does best in contemporary stuff, but who knows what he might want to do next. |
