I agree it's time for a revival, but I've never found there to be unintentionally funny moments or laugh out loud lyrics... I've never found "I don't miss him inside me" funny and I don't think that is a mistake lyric where they didn't know how it might sound like sex. Why is imprisoned men thinking about big breasted women outside the prison bad? And why is knowing someone "like the back of my hand" a cringeworthy cliche? I don't know the hell one, I just remember "when you find you've gone to hell in a handbasket"... and I'm not sure what's wrong with that.
I don't think it hasn't been revived because it's thought of as unworthy or not good enough or full of cringeworthy things. I think it hasn't been revived because it's an expensive show depending how it's done, and it requires a lead female who is an fantastic singer, incredible dancer, and fantastic and alluring actress who can convincingly play two different roles... and who is famous enough to sell tickets if the show itself doesn't. Not to mention that the original production was a critic and popular hit directed by Hal Prince, so it's not as if it has been crying out for someone to give us a new way to see it and save the show (like The Color Purple or something like that). |
