| I've never found "I don't miss him inside me" funny and I don't think that is a mistake lyric where they didn't know how it might sound like sex. Indeed, the lyric (which is "I don't miss YOU inside me") is, of course, intentionally sexual. It's what Valentin is imagining Marta could be saying about him, in order to dissociate from her in his mind. ("Say it over and over, and someday you'll believe the lie.") I suppose the "inside me" lyric could be unintentionally funny if you have an audience full of teen boys lol, but otherwise it seems like a very frank and fitting lyric to me. It also makes for a very intense contrast in what the two men experience - Molina thinking of his mother, but Valentin thinking of his girlfriend. Lyrics like "when you find you've gone to hell in a handbasket" are meant to be diegetic lyrics from Aurora's songs in her movies. Perhaps Ebb was being a bit sly here by intentionally using a phrase that seems a bit off. The problem I feel with the Warden's "like the back of my hand" lyric is just that he keeps singing it over and over - and with that, I think the phrase gets more attention than it should. Once might not have seemed so bad, lol. That said, I think it's still miles better than "These kids hit walls on every side" and other choice lyrics from Miss Saigon lol. (I should also say that I hold both Ebb and Maltby is incredible esteem.) I also agree with you about the problems of casting Aurora. For musical theatre audiences, Chita was perfect casting, given her own legendary career - I really think that in order for the show to work well, we need to feel something for that actress in the same way that Molina feels for Aurora. Largely because it's pretty much a one-dimensional character in Molina's memory, so we don't get any other major way to identify with her. I do think it's a fantastic score and an intriguing show, and I would love to see it revived. |
