This is thorny territory.
Watching Renée Goldsberry rap on something like the cut song "Congratulations" (linked below) convinced me that rap is a genre that she's very comfortable performing in, but when I saw her performance (which was hands down my favorite in the entire original cast) I never doubted that Angelica was a woman of means who'd grown up privileged and well educated. Is that because of the way she speaks?
Probably.
The London cast's Angelica, Rachel John, code switches throughout the show -- as do MANY of the other performers in every single one of the casts -- and it does work well in her favor when Angelica needs to get her point across by relying on some of those language skills. But no, I couldn't say she tops Goldsberry's performance.
I kinda don't think we'll ever see a better Angelica than Renée, who was just luminous in every way.
