| I can't base my opinion on anything but hunch -- I've only seen Goldsberry, and early on in the B'way run (first 6 weeks) -- but I'd have to agree. The performance and character just seemed so effortlessly in sync, one in service of the other. If anything, it created an expectation: that there's more Angelica in Hamilton than there is. Adding italics, lost the rest of my post. Damn. I was opining that there's some anticipation, based on the way Angelica's intro -- really two, both powerful -- shapes our investment. Goldsberry gave such a star performance, we just wanted more from the character. Miranda was historically fair and used her quite purposefully. But after "Satisfied," one of the greatest character songs because it reveals every facet of this woman in 4 minutes and change, we get only glimpses of Angelica. Not a structural flaw, but all about that expectation*. Goldsberry just made a whopping impact. *I used to bring up the issue of Angelica being left out of the initial narration. She was opinionated, informed, a logical person to comment freely. Yet Miranda doesn't use her in the opening number the way he employs Eliza. She's one of the few major players not given verses. I've never understood this, unless he's truly saving her for her two big numbers. (But Eliza gets a 2nd entrance, too). She's used sparingly after she marries and heads off in "Non Stop." Always effectively. And yeah, giving her "Quiet Uptown" is just perfect. It's the older Angelica with insight and wisdom. Maybe Miranda just knew she's a special force, and shouldn't be ... for lack of a better word ... exploited. |
