"Small people live small lives, facing small, inconsequential struggles which aren't enough to motivate full songs."
The people may be small but their struggles were achingly portrayed. Each of the stories in this nowhere town were vivid to me. The young couple facing a tenuous relationship with a baby to contend with. The father still mourning his wife who comes alive through music. The insecure young man who needs encouragement just to speak to communicate with a girl. The owner of the cafe longing to make a connection and the guy waiting by the phone all night for just that reason.
Who provides the stimulation? A troupe of ordinary men from Egypt. There is a common humanity there that is exquisitely portrayed. I thought it was perfection. Direction, scenic design, music, acting all contributing to the whole. |
