| Hi there As a London resident and frequent attendee at the Donmar - I think it most unlikely that they will have pocketed the money as you suggest, and highly likely that even though it may have been showing as sold out on the website - the theatre itself still had a lot of tickets of their own to sell. The Donmar has always seemed to hold back a large number of house seats and allocate many to various schemes to encourage people who don't normally go to the theatre to attend performances there. I suspect that at the last minute they release these seats and would sell them before any 'returns'. Often at the Donmar, in spite of it being 'sold out' I see pockets of empty seats (sometimes enough for everyone who is standing to find one) - and I can't remember the last time i saw a returns queue there (probably Tom Hiddleston as Coriolanus). People assume that they aren't going to be able to get in so don't seem to bother asking. It's also not the hot venue it was a few years ago and in spite of the cast there's not been any real buzz around this production either. Lots of activity when it was announced - almost none when it opened. I also found that they are one of the more helpful box offices in London. They are no longer part of Ambassadors Theatre Group - everything is now in house - and all the staff really seem to have a shared passion for the venue and the work (even if at the moment it's rather more miss than hit). If you do get in touch with the leadership team then I'm sure they would take your complaint seriously - they seem very hands on - though I'd suggest framing it in a less accusatory way. |
