Interesting reading this discussion. It seems clear from my own experience and what others have said in this thread, that this show inspires two major reactions. Yours, which I will sum up as boredom, and the other which seems to be exquisite, gentle, aching, adult. Personally I fall into the boredom camp, as did the four people I saw the show with.
But what I like is there seems to be respect from both sides about the other opinion. None of this "if you don't love it/hate it there must be something wrong with you/you're crazy" kind of talk!
It is stating the obvious to say we all have different tastes, but this is a common human experience shared with books, movies, TV shows, restaurants, vacation destinations, etc etc.
As a lover and analyzer of theatre, though, I was challenged by the rapturous response compared with my own indifference. Sometimes we want to know "why" we feel a way. What was most interesting to me as I read the hugely glowing reviews is that I could understand intellectually what people were seeing in it, or getting from it. I kept saying "oh yeah, I can see that, I get that". But truly, I got absolutely none of that while watching it in the theatre. I like to think after a lifetime of theatre going i am perceptive enough to get it. But the things that people loved so much, I just didn't see that on stage (although I get how some people could have). |
