The move is definitely not happening this season. The reviews from Chris Jones (3-1/2 stars -- Tribune) and Hedy Weiss (highly recommended -- Sun-Times) were both pretty strong. I liked the play a lot -- it's a neat little thriller, but then I'm a big Steppenwolf fan -- and I paid $20 for my ticket. My post about The Minutes back in November was very positive but it was challenged strongly by at least one other ATC-er who absolutely hated it. I think the problem is that it's an original play by a Chicago playwright with Steppenwolf actors -- none of whom are very well known by the average Broadway theatre-goer. With the exception of August: Osage County on Broadway and Beautiful Thing off-Broadway, original plays out of Chicago generally bomb commercially in New York (unless Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig decide to star in them).
The Minutes is a good play IMO -- I suspect it will eventually be done off-Broadway by one of the non-profits. |
