"A show that airbrushes conflict out of the Arab-Israeli conflict is not going to have conflict. "

I love THE BAND'S VISIT as is, but I do wonder if the creators considered including some recognition of the Arab-Israeli conflict in the words of some of the characters, rather than relying on the audience's knowledge of the conflict as background. Unless I'm misremembering, there is no direct discussion of the conflict in the show, and the fact that it exists is mostly conveyed through the initial awkwardness between the Egyptians and the townspeople. I assume the movie treats the conflict in the same very oblique way, which is interesting in itself, but obviously not the only way to tell the story.
