Joseph and David Zellnik wrote a wonderfully charming boy-meets-boy musical set amid World War II, with 1940s-style songs. And what made this love story among soldiers especially timely was it was being performed before the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
I saw it in its various incarnations at the NYMF (2005), Brooklyn's Gallery Players (2007) and York Theatre (2010), where it won raves.
Bobby Steggert gave a Tony-caliber performance, and it was delightfully directed Igor Goldin and choreographed by Jeffry Denman.
Producers planned to take it to the Great White Way, with a new director (David Cromer), after more revisions, but it never got there.
What a shame it didn't get the broader Broadway audiences (and awards) it deserved. But it was just done last summer in London. |
