| Without agreeing or disagreeing, I just wanted to offer one slight reframing: the creatives on a show - like the writer(s) and the director - are doing work on the show, often unpaid, for a long time before the show happens. For both writer and director, it could be years of work for which they much in the way of money, as they generally only get paid significantly once the show is running. In the case of a writer, it may be many more years prior to those simply bringing a script into existence. "Hamilton" took seven years to make it to the Public, and most of Lin's work over that period of time was spec. You make many good points about why actors should be better compensated for their investment in the creation, but being a writer or a director (or any realm in the modern day theater landscape) is not necessarily easy in its own right. |
