| Your points about years of development without compensation for the actual writing are spot on. Most members of the Dramatists Guild (as the annual pitch for the DG Fund makes clear to all) do not make anything close to a living wage. Royalties pay bills when you land on, say, an "Other Desert Cities," or "Vanya, etc." or "Allergist's Wife." Yet only plays that create a ripple effect of subsidiary rights generate a lot of income. For musicals, the world tends to look at the "Wickeds" "Chorus Lines" and "Hamiltons" as the model. But can you imagine if every actor who creates, i.e. is the first to play a role, earns pieces of a show? Most shows employ many actors who don't move through every workshop. Should Maureen McGovern, who did an early workshop, and the late Barbara Cook, who played Margaret at the RSC, have pieces of "Carrie"? (No longer the butt of a joke, by the way; since it was revived and revised, "Carrie" does nicely all over the country. Google it, the production stills indicate ubiquitous interest in this material.) Even "Wicked" changed out its Elphaba relatively late in the game (Block, who later got to play it). Yes, "Hamilton" and "Chorus Line" and "Rent" are fairly unique, "Chorus..." the most so, since the lives of the actors actually were part of the text. But it's hard to have an ironclad rule about these matters, particularly with the tiers of workshops that put shows through years of development. It's not always easy to determine who shaped a show, and who came in as first interpreter. It's not always the same contribution. |
