I don't know if it's "normal" or not but the Love Never Dies version is actually the third incarnation of that song.

It debuted as a song called "The Heart Is Slow To Learn" sometime in the late 90's. It was intended to be for a Phantom of the Opera sequel that never materialized. The song was performed live though at a Royal Albert Hall concert celebrating ALW's music. (Link is below.)

The second version is "Our Kind of Love" from The Beautiful Game. Oddly enough this was the first (and for the longest time, the only) ALW show I ever saw. I knew some of the music from his other hit shows but this was the first one I saw on stage. I always thought the score was underrated & felt that "Our Kind of Love" was one of his best songs. I guess ALW felt that way too...

Because it surfaced again as the title song to "Love Never Dies."

Wikipedia even says the melody is borrowed from a Puccini aria. So... yeah. I'm not sure if it's "normal" or not but it's well documented. It's not like ALW was trying to hide it or anything. And I think he has a history of doing this kind of thing with other songs as well.
