I, Tonya

Allison Janney terrific, finding such spirit and spunk in such a dry character
Bobby Cannavale - just right, quirky, good casting

could any of you not help hearing reverberations of 'Rose's Turn'
in the diner scene when Tonya visits her mother at work

and of course, when Tonya takes up boxing and notes: This is america,
the similarities with Chicago were unmistakable

Gosh, I didn't like the movie or the performance at all. I thought Janney delivered a not very compelling caricature in a movie that kept announcing it was challenging our prejudgement of its characters as carciatures. But I was surprised at how much I liked Mrs. Jonathan Cake, Julianne Nicholson in it.

Very true. But I ate it up anyway. We love the broad stuff, Americans.

Funny - for me, when I see someone like Bobby Cannavale in a small role like that all I think is how incredible that would have been for an actor who isn't hugely successful. I also find that when they cast known and recognizable actors in roles that don't need them, it takes me out of it all the more. I don't know why they offered it to him, but I wish someone else had the chance to have fun and stand out in that role in this now fairly big movie.

Another way of looking at that is that even a successful actor such as Bobby Cannavale has to accept a small role in order to keep working.

I don't question his taking the role really, I object to it being offered to him.

Great point. Throw somebody else a crumb. It's like Lena Waite. Does this writer need to be acting and freezing out minority actresses that are highly trained performers? Is she wrong, her producers or both? Maybe I'm just venting.

Oh don't get me started on the "acting" on Master of None...

I just thought he was showing some very droll comic chops, which frankly I'd never seen before - or expected. For more of this he's a riot in the third season of Mr. Robot. I'd go as far as to call it a 'comic turr-deforce'!

Not to worry. Som enterprising producer, with not one original thought in his brain, will attempt to bring this to Bway...

Heck, SpongeBob made it.

Wow, I loved the film and all the performers (inc Mr Cannavale, who was hilarious). While I don't think it NEEDS to be a musical I wouldn't doubt it COULD be one-- a la XANADU. But kudos to Margot Robbie and Craig Gillespie, who created the most entertaining movie I got to see this year.
