| Got to see Dear Evan Hansen tonight because a good friend had an extra ticket at the last minute. I had seen the show off-Broadway and when it first opened on Broadway, both times with Ben Platt. I thought Platt gave a flat-out brilliant performance in both venues; I liked the show, loved the score and thought Platt, Will Roland and Rachel Bay Jones were award-worthy. Whole production--while busy--was excellent. So...it was with some hesitation that I went back tonight. I didn't want to mess with my initial impressions, and was concerned that Noah Galvin wouldn't "equal" Platt, and that Jones, Roland and team-- most of the original cast, still in the show-- would have gotten a bit tired of the show. I am thrilled to report the show is in excellent shape. Galvin was tremendous. It's a different performance from Platt's but I was just as impressed, moved, engaged. To me, Galvin read as a good deal younger than Platt-- he really seemed like a high school kid. He sang beautifully and conveyed a frailty and vulnerability that I never quite got from Platt. His youth also made me see the other teen characters as younger, and I felt it helped define the parents as more, well, parental. This is the first time I've seen the show where I felt the pain of parenthood (my kids are older than Evan now, but I remember those days all-too-well) and identified more with the parents than the kids. Was that Galvin's youthfulness? I don't know. The whole cast remains outstanding....Rachel Bay Jones tonight was, again, absolutely devastating. I just know that I loved this third-time at DEH as much as the other two. And I fully appreciate the power of that production design, too....maybe the last several years of social media immersion have allowed me to catch up with the DEH designers' vision! Guess I'm heading back to see Mr Trensch, who I think is one of the most talented people working today. But see Galvin if you can, too. |
