| Many small theaters in Chicago use non-traditional casting in their productions. There is a popular, up-and-coming Latino actor who has been cast in a wide assortment of roles in several shows that I have seen over the last few years -- mostly shows where race or ethnic background is not an issue. In general, although he has dark hair and usually sports a mustache, he looks pretty white. However, most recently he played the lead in a musical where his character is Latino. My partner and I were sitting in the first row and it was obvious that he was using dark makeup. It didn't bother me, and none of the reviews mentioned it. However, since the issue of "yellowface" (and now "brownface") is frequently talked about on the ATC board, I thought I would bring it up. Is it common for white-looking Latino actors to use darker make-up for such a role? I'm just asking a question -- not trying to create an issue (if that's possible). |
