Foster will indeed turn 43 this year, and Channing was a week or two shy of her 43rd birthday when DOLLY first opened on Broadway. So those facts are indeed true.
I'd argue that Channing's career arc has encouraged the notion that this is a role for an older actress, since she starred in the show's only two previous Broadway revivals, when she was 57 and 74 (respectively). (Perhaps she made it her mission to balance out Streisand's having been cast in the movie when she was a few years shy of 30?)
I think Foster would be terrific in the part and would welcome the (unlikely) opportunity to see her do it now. Maybe she'll do it around 50? If/whenever she does, I hope she gets to do "Just Leave Everything to Me" instead of "I Put My Hand In." |
