Except you need a BIG name to take on Dolly. No one knows who Sutton Foster is except theater people. (yes she's on a TV show but it's not a big enough hit where tourists would recognize her).

IMHO, Foster is as big a name as Peters for a Broadway show. I just don't see her as the character.

I think you're underestimating Foster, who is currently on a TV show that's a HUGE hit for TV Land.

Of course the premise of that show is that she's an older woman who is passing for a 26 year old so it's odd to suggest Foster. Reminds me of a Streisand situation. Though admitted I LOVE Streisand in the film so I'd be really interested in seeing Foster do it. (Not that I imagine she ever would).

I know I shall get criticized for this: I am not a fan of Sutton Foster. For me, as talented as she is, she lacks what I think is essential for Dolly: warmth. She is a cold performer and is not likeable on stage — for me at least. I always feel as though I am watching a robot whenever I see her. I know this is an unpopular opinion as she is greatly loved by people on this board, but that is how I feel.

I generally like her but can also recognize what you mean, at least the cool robotic part. I do, on the other hand, find her likable. I think some/much can be attributed to the roles. Millie, Janet, Reno--period pieces with a certain style, not deeply emotional pieces. Unfortunately I cannot remember a thing about Little Women or Shrek, shows I didn't care for. I also think she's very funny. I wonder what people thought of her as Eponine. I didn't see her do it.
