This Sunday and next the Paley Center in New York and LA partners with BroadwayCon to present free screenings of TV specials that enticed many a young theater lover to come to New York (or move to New York!!!) and experience Broadway theater first-hand. None of these programs is available commercially. Jan 14 schedule: at 12:15 pm "Carousel" (1967) w/ Robert Goulet (at his best) as Billy and "introducing" Mary Grover as Julie; 2:15 is a 2013 "Carousel" discussion from the Paley Center that was moderated by Ted Chapin with Mary Grover and famed Agnes de Mille dancers Bambi Linn ("Louise" in the original Bway production in 1945!) and Gemze de Lappe--includes 1945 film footage of Bambi dancing the Act II Ballet; and at 3 pm is a half-hour segment from The Tonight Show in 1972 devoted to "Pippin" including interviews with Ben Vereen and John Rubinstein and three complete numbers from the show. Jan 21 is "Brigadoon" at 12:15 with Goulet, Sally Ann Howes, Peter Falk, Marlyn Mason, and Edward Villella followed at 1:45 by a 1986 South Bank Show devoted to the career of Andrew Lloyd Webber that ends with extended rehearsal and performance footage from "Phantom of the Opera."
