Sutton Foster as Dolly?
Posted by: gcarl44 04:51 pm EST 01/14/18

Recently there was a thread with the above title, but I am restarting it just to make it more currant (actually don't know if I can do that). I would love to hear more about everyone's ideas of their perfect future Dolly, because I have my own AND it is not a "star". While probably not the greatest box office draw for tourists , maybe with the strength and reputation of the production, it could work. I don't think she has ever had a "starring" role on Broadway, but I think she would make a great Dolly. I am talking about Mary Testa, who is great performer and comic actress, and she can sing. Thoughts, anyone? AND don't knock me for being naive about the box office. I would just like to see her in it.

TERRIBLE idea. She is far too young and too self-assured in the WRONG way. She'd be a solid Irene but NEVER Dolly!

I am talking about Mary Testa. Read the message, not just the title.

So are you saying Bette Midler as Dolly was self-assured in the RIGHT way ?

Box Office be damned, Mary Testa would knock our socks off.

Perhaps Mary Testa will do the next "Dolly" revival after she becomes a household name after starring in a hit television series.

Would not be surprised if HELLO, DOLLY! is revived more often similar to GYPSY

She's an Ernestina not a Dolly. I like her, but a little goes a long way for me.

Considering the list of actresses who've played the role over the years, I could see just about any 40+ actress in this role. This list of women (and a couple of men) who've taken it on is astounding and Dolly seems to be one of those roles that will stretch to accommodate whatever the specific performer brings to it.

To that end, Christine Ebersole could be a great Dolly. So too could Sutton Foster, Audra MacDonald, Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley, Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Kristin Chenoweth, or [fill in the blank here].
