So long Dolly! Bette's Penultimate Performance today!

Today's matinee was Bette's final "public" performance. Tonight she does it once again for the Actor's Fund. When I bought the ticket thought it would be her last so I was bit disappointed . That said, this afternoon was a great celebration of a legendary performance and production. Everyone was at full tilt. This was my 2nd go round with Bette (saw it with Donna too, whom I loved) and if anything she has grown with the part and has made it completely her own. There were a few times I felt she was milking her moments , particularly in the eating sequence but no one can ham it it up like Bette. The entire production felt as fresh as it was In March but with even more confidence and elan. Bette's entrance, Put on Your Sunday Clothes, Before the Parade Passes By and of course you know what elicited wildly enthusiastic ovations, in 3 of which people stood and cheered . I was disappointed that Bette didn't have her own curtain call but I assume she wanted this to be the company's moment too. There's a lot more to say about this afternoon, in particular and this great show, in general but I did feel a tinge of sadness at the thought that we probably won't again see the likes of this type of musical with as galvanizing a production. I also assume that this will probably be the Divine one's swan song. Not that Bette won't still be out there doing her thing but probably never again like this in which all the planets aligned The result of course was a magical experience for the ages.
