THE CHILDREN Today

A quiet, cryptic play. Perfectly played by a cast of three, THE CHILDREN points in a number of directions at once which could either frustrate or intrigue depending on your investment in hearing what these three sixty something characters have to say. And what they're not saying. A horrible, nuclear event gives the play a shape, but the more compelling fallout here is of the mortal variety. The anxiety about aging and yielding to what time requires of us all is what darkens the play and gives it depth. At what point might it be selfishness--and an impediment to the advancement of the young and so culture--to want to stay alive? Children must exceed their parents and parents, of course, must get out of their way. An important part of this is relieving children of the need to repair ruptures that they didn't cause. Kirkwood is smartly sympathetic, intellectually and emotionally, to the tension between the ageless wish to keep advancing and the need to sometime step aside so that the world may, as it must, spin ahead.

I also liked it a lot. I agree with some of the posters below that complain about its length. I think it could have been trimmed especially towards the end. Also, the whole poop incident went on for too long and it was unnecessary as a metaphor for the anger/resentment of one of the characters. It is a little frustrating but I enjoyed it a lot.
Unfortunately, I do not think it is getting the reception it deserves. Some of my theatre savvy friends hardly know about it. I think that the reality of mounting a play without "stars" is quickly approaching its demise. Sad but it is what it is. I recommend it to anyone interested in contemporary theatre. It is a pity that HP will win all the awards for play. "The Children" deserves some of those awards. And, yes, I saw HP in London.

Brilliantly put --- about as eloquent a precis of this superb play as one could wish for. I hope Lucy Kirkwood sees it at some point: it would gladden her soul.

She's a bore - She could have said the same thing in 15 minutes, but she dragged it out to 2 hours of pure torture, no intermission. I couldn't see one awake person in the rows and rows around me. Everyone was just passed out asleep it was so boring. I guess if you like Beckett and Pinter, you'd like something like this.

Eeyore is one of my favorite characters and so are you. (and you are most certainly not "filled with sawdust" as is he, apparently.) Not sure what summer person is filled with.

Not surprising to read this from you given you gave a standing ovation to the dreck that was “Bulldozer.”

You've revealed far more about yourself than you have about THE CHILDREN, a beautifully written, thought-provoking work. I thought the acting, direction, and design work were superb. Sergius' succinct take is spot-on, as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps you should stick to lighter, glitzier fare that requires less concentration.

"Thank you for a memorable afternoon, usually one must go to a bowling alley to meet a man of your stature."

I know that neither Beckett nor Pinter could meet your exacting standards, as your preferred fare is no doubt "Everybody Loves Opal" or "Mamie's Getting Married" or perhaps "Under the Yum Yum Tree."
