Miles for Mary and Ballyturk

I had a great time seeing Miles for Mary at Playwrights Horizon last night. The play from the Mad Ones is consistently funny as five high school teachers prepare for a telethon to raise money for two athletic scholarships named in memory of a student who died young. There are serious moments, too, The cast is perfect.

Balllyturk at St. Ann's Warehouse is a more challenging play, brought over from Galway. Playwright Enda Walsh has written a Beckett-like play about two brothers caught in a run down room as they act out the characters from the town of Ballyturk, which could be real or imaginary. There is a lot of frantic wordplay and movement and I admit I was ready to tear my hair out but then something happens and the play slows down and turns into something mesmerizing and strange.

Does anyone know if there's a chance Miles for Mary could be extended? nmi

I don't know if the budget or tight schedule at PH allows an extension but it deserves to run longer. The icing on the cake for me was that I got shut out of the lottery and was offered 3 dates to buy $15 tickets. I think they are trying to attract a younger audience and that worked for the performance I attended.

I liked Miles for Mary, too. Fortunately, I've little experience with these kinds of "let's reach a consensus" meetings -- but I'm aware of how they work and found much in this play that was hilarious and thought provoking. In fact, I'm still thinking about it 5 days later. re. Fairinelli: I was hoping for a mash up between The Madness of King George and Amadeus, instead I just got a mild mash -- a little beautiful music and a little master showmanism with some contrived dialog. It was barely a divertisement.
